Security

“Play Protect warned me.” Here’s why.

It is normal to see a warning when you install CatsBlock Weather. It does not mean the app is harmful — it means Google has not seen this app before.

Why the warning appears

Play Protect is cautious with apps installed outside Google Play. In practice, the warning appears because:

  • The APK does not come from Google Play and is signed by an independent developer.
  • Each new build is a brand-new file that Google has never scanned.
  • The app has features Play Protect treats carefully: install permission for its built-in updater, location, notifications, camera and background sync.

Why it stops after install

Play Protect’s unfamiliar-app check happens when you install. Tap More details → Install anyway (or Scan app) and the file is analyzed. When nothing harmful is found, it does not warn again while you use the app. A later update can show the prompt once more, because it is a new file.

You may see a Play Protect warning

It says Google has not seen this app before. That is expected for apps installed outside Google Play, and it is not a malware finding. Use More details → Install anyway or Scan app. Do not turn Play Protect off.

Why Play Protect detects it

Play Protect checks apps for harmful behavior and also treats unfamiliar apps carefully. In practice, a few things make CatsBlock Weather look “new” to it:

Installed outside Google PlayThe APK comes from GitHub, not the Play Store, and is signed with the developer’s own key rather than a key Google manages.
Every build is a new fileEach release is a new APK with a new fingerprint. Google has not scanned it yet, so the first install of each build can show a prompt.
Sensitive-sounding permissionsThe built-in updater needs permission to install packages, plus location, notifications, camera (Live Moon) and background sync. Each one is explained below.

Why it doesn’t warn after installing

The unfamiliar-app check runs at install time. When you choose Scan app or Install anyway, the app is analyzed. If no harmful behavior is found, Play Protect has nothing to flag while you use it, so the warning does not come back. When you update to a new build, you might see the prompt once more — that is the same new-file effect.

Is it safe? Check it yourself

You should not have to take anyone’s word for it. These are things you can verify:

The source code is publicRead it at github.com/catsblock/CatsBlock-Weather-v2.
The APK is built in publicReleases are produced by a GitHub Actions workflow in that repository (Build APK) and published as build-N releases, so you can see exactly how each file was made.
Compare the SHA-256When GitHub provides it, the checksum is shown on this page. Compare it with the file you downloaded (sha256sum file.apk on a computer, or any hash app on Android).
Scan it with VirusTotalUpload the APK to virustotal.com and read the results from many engines. A single odd result from one engine on a new APK is common; look at the overall picture.
Review the permissionsAndroid shows them before you install and in Settings → Apps → CatsBlock Weather → Permissions. The app works with location and camera denied.
No ads, accounts or analyticsThe privacy policy states the app has none, and stores your cities and preferences only on your device.

If anything doesn’t match, don’t install. Download only from this page or the repository’s Releases.

How to install
